im going to be building a new rig for general gaming with a gtx 1050ti when its released later this month. (h110 motherboard and 8gb of 2133mhz ram.

i'll be gaming at either 1080p or 1440p depending on what monitor i decide to buy.

i'm happy playing games at medium settings so wondering which cpu to go for.

im thinking either an i5 6400, 6500 or an i3 6100.

i'm not sure if an i5 will be overkill for what i want or will the i3 6100 be fine for medium settings on this rig.

thanks.

Unless you're in a rush, wait for Kaby Lake CPUs and motherboards. Should be before the end of the year as far as I know.

Won't make a world of difference with unlocked CPUs, but the locked ones will likely be a good chunk faster at the same price point.

Hi

+1 for the above. Wait for KabyLake, and grab an i5 then.

i5 is not an overkill in my opinion. Quad core is rather required for many games, and dual core will simply said: suck.
Matched with 1050Ti or 1060, it should make a good piece of gaming equipment (maybe not 4K on ultra). But sufficient for 1080p/1440p in medium/high settings (depending on a game and config).

I'm pretty pleased with my i3 6100. I will add it was bought as a stop gap from June '16 until Kaby lake or cannon lake(if it supports the same socket) i5 is released.

If you want a CPU which will last for the next 3-5 years then I would go with an i5.

Personally I would never consider a faster CPU to be overkill - worst case, it lasts through several graphics card upgrades :)

im thinking either an i5 6400, 6500 or an i3 6100.

I would rule out the i5 6400 immediately, as although it has 4 physical threads vs the i3 6100's 2 physical, 2 HT - it has at least a 400Mhz clock speed deficit vs the I3.

i3 6100 - 3.7Ghz
i5 6400 - 2.7Ghz (3.3Ghz Turbo)
i5 6500 - 3.2Ghz (3.6Ghz Turbo)

Higher clock speed still has a place, and in older/less threaded games the i3 6100 would likely be quicker than the i5 6400.

And that 3.3ghz is only for one core when chip is stressed. £180 the 6400 costs.

thanks to everyone for your advice.

i think i will go for the i3 6100 now as i don't want to wait for kaby lake.

once kaby lake comes out ill have more cash next year so i could always sell my i3 and put the money towards a 7th gen i5 next year, hopefully it will still be socket 1151.

Worth noting the current motherboards won't support CPUs past Kaby Lake, but the new motherboards coming out with Kaby Lake will support the next 2 generations as well. Called Coffee Lake and Cannon Lake.

So if you can possibly wait, you'll get a futureproof motherboard on top of more CPU for the same money.

As above, you'll need a new motherboard too sadly if you want to use Coffee Lake or Cannon Lake.

Agreed 100%. I have been thoroughly impressed with the 6100 in my wifes PC. For the price difference compared to the i5s its a great chip.
