CPU going crazy...

I'm having a problem, I seem to be getting this problem where every now and then, my CPU goes up and down, even when I'm not using it, and it creates this big massive lag. It will go from say 0% to 8% to 41% on the taskmanager, then back to 0, back up, etc, you get the idea. Anyway, I'm sure it's a virus of some kind, but then I've got up to date purchased copy of McAfee, and Spybot, which reveal nothing, I've also used HiJackThis to see if I can find anything, and I don't think there is any problems there, although I can't really tell if all of those things could be disguises. Anyway, what do you think it could be? It hasn't happened for 12 hours at least, then just 10 minutes ago, it happened for a while, and then it went away after 5 minutes. It only started happening two days ago..

Hi, I don't want to do that if I can help it. BTW it's System Idle Process, it's using 99, where's all the rest of the processes are using 00

Nobody had the heart to reply then? :P

System Idle Process is supposed to take up the CPU 'usage' when nothing else is... it means the CPU is idle. When System Idle Process is lower than 99% it means the CPU is doing something. :)

The System Idle Process should be using 99% most of the time, that's just showing what's left out of 100. What you need to do is find out what process is using the CPU when the total load goes up to 40%.

Sorry, but you don't. You have the 'system' process consuming CPU time. And you admit to having a spyware problem.
I've got rid of the spyware now and the problem still occurs. He doesn't actually say which process it is that's causing the problem so how do you know it's not the same thing? I'm just making an assumption on the fact that we have very similar symptoms.

I think the OP is referring to "System Idle Process" which is the idle state the pc sits in when it's not doing anything.. so System Idle Process running at 99% means it is 99% idle :) Looking at your thread, you have a different problem (no idea what though).

BTW it's System Idle Process,

Based it on that bit of info!

As has been said, system idle process is meant to use up cpu time when no other apps are using it. System idle process is on 99% most of the time for me as well. So it's obviously a different process that's causing it for the op, like it is for me.
