how do you guys calculate this? how do you know if a cpu will under perform the gpu etc? is there a specific method?

obviously you don't stick a 1.4ghz single core with a 5870 for obvious reasons but how do you calculate the right mixture?

is the calculation done by the number of cores e.g. single, duo, quad etc etc or is it based on the speed?

i have not noticed any difference in the last 2 cpu's with the same card.

i had a Core2Duo @ 3.8ghz with 4890 asus (pretty much same FPS in games)
also Core2Quad @ 3ghz with 4890 asus (same fps -ish give or take a few fps)

It's largely down to benchmarks and personal usage.

There are tests out there that show a correlation between CPU speed and framerate difference on certain CPUs/graphics card combinations.

There is no "formula" as such.

It used to be clockspeed > cores

But now it's a mixture of both, so it's still a case of higher core speed is better, but more cores is better still as more games are using multithreading.
