Hi folks
Given the stuff in my sig is around 8 years old, support for Windows 10 ends soon, and it’s beginning to struggle a little, it’s time for an upgrade
I have a Phanteks mATX case and a Corsair 750w PSU, and peripherals that I want to keep. I have a cheap 28” 4k monitor that I use with onboard graphics to browse, YouTube, and Excel. I also have a 1200 x 1920 monitor connected to the 1080ti that I use for gaming
I’m a casual gamer and play largely POE1 and software limit frames to 60, which is probably the monitor refresh rate anyway! POE2, which I want to start playing, is apparently graphically far superior and likely to stress the current system further

1. I’ll probably look to buy the CPU, Mobo and RAM and cooler new
In the past I’ve always had a view to overclocking, but don’t think I can be bothered with it now
So far as the Mobo is concerned, I’d like onboard graphics, and Wi-Fi. I always baulk at expensive ones and just want something basic

2. As for the GPU, I’d be happy to stick with the current one until I can bag something decent from the members market. I assume I’d get more bang for buck there

3. On top of the £1k budget, I’ll happily throw £100 or so at a NVMe ssd. I only use around 250GB storage at the moment and can’t see my needs increasing much

Suggestions please for the 3 requirements

TIA

Here's a suggestion that also gives you a small upgrade in capacity to the 32GB you have now. Feel free to look for lower latency, but don't pay too much or you'll be into 64GB territory.

The 9600X isn't necessary, but I don't think you get the free game with the 7600/7600X. If you don't want the game, I'd see if you can get a reasonably priced 7600 or 7700.

As with the 9600X, B850 isn't necessary (a A620/B650 board will do), but almost all B850 have PCI-E 5.0 graphics.

The B650 model in my spec has 2x DP and 1x HDMI, but I must say, I'm not sure how easy it is to configure onboard and DGPU, since these CPUs can actually use the DGPU through the motherboard's display outputs.

If looking at new for graphics, I'd try and get a 9070 (there were some at £450 awhile back :o ).

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £589.94 (includes delivery: £7.99)

A cheaper alternative that could save money for a 9070 XT is to go 12600K with a B760 motherboard and re-use your memory.

£249 (incl. VAT)
£180 (incl. VAT)
£120 (incl. VAT)
£105 (incl. VAT)
£200 (incl. VAT)
£125 (incl. VAT)
Seeing as you had a budget up to £1k on a cpu/mbo/ram/ssd I thought I'd still go more price friendly, but a bit less budget budget for mobo....both mATX as guess you're putting in your existing case, or can it take an atx?
ram, 32gb will be fine..only couple games require more which a player will know about anyway, and seeing as the games you play, POE1 uses 7gb ram and 2 12gb, so 32 more than enough...I'd rather have the much tighter timings of the 6000C30...did put a 6000C36 in there as £81 rather than £100..the $100 kit is on offer so same price as non rgb version. put a choice of 2 1tb ssd's as well and the rgb version of the 36 freezer
cpu used the 7700 8 core..comes mith monsterhunter also..just an alternative as poe is meant to be quite cpu intensive, though didn't look enough to see whether truly multicore

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £958.84 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thanks
Case is mATX only

I think I'll be going for a B850 mobo and a 9600X and the suggested cooler

As the total budget incl NMVe is around £1,100, and all but the gpu will be £550 ish, that still leaves me with £500/£550 for the gpu
Actually, I don't know I could stomach that much on a gpu
If I put the budget at £450/£500, what would be your advice? My 1080ti is fine to use as a temporary card, but obvs is getting on a bit
Like Tetras says, a 9070 would fit the bill, if I could snag one at that price, which seems unlikely at the moment
So I can either wait until the prices change (thanks Mr Trump, I'm expecting a flood of cheap cards in the UK soon!), or go secondhand, but if I do that I'm not sure what I should realistically aim for...

Can you clarify, what are you hoping for with the GPU upgrade?

To be blunt, a 1080 Ti doesn't really need upgrading for 1080p, since it still competes pretty well with current 1080p cards.

The 9070 can do 1440p comfortably and 4K if you'd like to switch monitors, but they're overkill for 1080p.

That said, it is hard to recommend any less than a 4070 Super or 7800 XT, just because beating the 1080 Ti comprehensively isn't going to be easy/cheap.

unless he as a need for 48gb of ram i was avoid cl48 like an house fire
I went for 48GB just because the OP already has 32GB, so I was looking for an upgrade.

The 48GB C30 kits are £170, which I didn't think makes much sense against the 64GB kits.

The Crucial Pro one is slow because C48 is the JEDEC spec for 6000.

i get this totally but given the budget id just get a 32gb cl30 kit for £90

although if its just gaming dose the CL make much differance?

so, from above, a 1080ti is along the lines of a 6600XT, arc 770, a 9070 is 220% and 9070xt 245% better. as a guide i just bought a 9070xt and shoved in my system replacing a 3070ti which is 46% faster than your 1080ti...and wow...what a difference
it's hard to recommend a nvidia card really as newer games are really eating the vram of the gpu's as developers add better and better textures and also to some extent, aren't quite so great at optimising games any more...your current gpu is a 11gb vram card as is, so you don't want to go backwards
I's say if your gaming at 1200P (only just above 1080p), then something like a 7800xt would be good..that's a 180% (if your card is 100%) uplift for you, and you can get one for £440 from shop, less 2nd hand...only hesitancy is the fact that for upscaling, which will add more longevity to the card it can only do fsr3, which isn't that great...whereas the new cards can do fsr4 which is far superior...I've actually bought a 7800xt for my son's build..it's brand new but also 2nd hand so to speak...I'm still undecided whether to open it up and use it or just sell it on and get something better but it was a great price and justwent for it at the time..you've got access to MM with number of posts...
going with something like a 4070super..it'll definitely give you a gaming uplift...but 12gb, and you'll still be close to 450-500 i reckon...I'm not sold

it's enough for me to maybe wait a bit as apparently amd will be releasing a 9060XT card with 16gb vram (they'll be doing a 8gb card also which no one should touch)...this will have fsr4 and if the card is similr in performace to a 7800xt...well, would fit the bill nicely....
otherwise I'd save up and get a 9070/9070XT

and only saying don't get a 12gb card or even a 8gb, as will be fine for older games you play and at your resolution, but if you ever decide to upgrade your monitor, you'll be stuffed, and the gpu is the most expensive part of your build...so ergo becomes the most expensive choice...

I think the issue with the 1080ti with modern games and going forward, is that some newer releases are starting to use feature sets which are not supported by the card. There are sometimes workarounds, such as there was with FF7: Rebirth, but that isn't always going to be the case.

That said, using it as a stop gap and waiting for availability and (hopefully) prices of the 9070XT and/or 5070ti to improve isn't a bad idea at all, and personally speaking at this point in time those are the minimum upgrade considerations I'd consider with the current bracket.

We should see mid range launches soon too, the 9060XT might be a decent shout but it's hard to know for sure, I fully expect the 5060/5060ti's to be bigger pieces of poo than their prior generation counterparts.

If your mate is willing to go second hand you could snag a bargain, especially if you have members market access as people on here will often help with any remaining warranty etc.

Thanks folks - now typing this on the new pc as shown in my sig

Previous sig was i7-7700k GA Z170N 2x16GB PC4 25600C16

I got the Arctic Freezer 36 - love the way the fans attach, sooo easy, buy my god, I thought I was going to break the mobo - so much pressure required, and I've fitted quite a few coolers in my time

I also got the Kioxia M2 as recommended

Decided to stick with the 1080ti for a while and see how it goes, it's not like I've spend the money on anything else yet

Off to the MM now to sell the replaced parts...reminds me, I need to suss out how to get the games bundle

Thanks again
