Hi,
So I've currently got a gtx 1080 on an msi Intel Z270 motherboard. My current CPU is an i5 (not sure what and cant check right now), but it bottlenecks a lot of the higher end games I play e.g. siege runs at around 50fps and lag spikes a lot. I was looking to upgrade to a better cpu, something like an i5-9600k but wasn't sure if that was the best thing to go for/if it's compatible? My budget is around £300.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks :)

what resolution are you playing at ?

9600k would require going z390 and a bit costly... 9600k is £240 odd - cheap good z390 is £109 and can reuse your ram.

Cheapest solution would be dropping in second hand i7 K and overclocking , specially with Ryzen 3*** launching on the 7th, expect a lot of 2nd hand i7s !!!!

also increase resolution to 1440p is gaming at 1080p to off load more to GPU. if your playing games likle BFV then yeah, more threads/cores would help.

Ryzen 3600 six core is looking to be £188 - mated with say MSI B450 £85-119 and hopefully you have 3000hz ram would be a nice upgrade !

I'm currently playing at 1080 on a 144hz monitor, I'm not looking to upgrade my mobo any time soon as I recent bought the last one, probably should've got z390 at the time lol.

There'll be a few people stuck on Z270 and limited CPU upgrade options who wished they had £300 to spend for their 1080p 144Hz setup. That you bought the board recently should just be an annoyance but I wouldn't compound the mistake given you can purchase something better with your budget.

I'd go with this. Sell the Z270 board and i5 and you'll get back a good chunk of your budget. A 7700K will only gain you a bit more and that money would be better spent on something more capable of handling gaming demands for more years.

Thank you for all the replies.
Say I wanted to upgrade today, I've noticed my ram is only 2400mhz. I've had a look on Amazon and found the b450 for £90, the ryzen 2700 for £200 or the 2700x for £260 and 16gb 3000mhz ram for £65. Would all of that work/be okay? Or would I need anything else or any changes that'd be better? Thanks :)

Three days left to the launch of Ryzen 3XXX. Waiting for reviews but from the leaks it's looking like a 3600 would be a better choice for gaming than a 2700X.

So hold off on CPU for a few days.

There's some Crucial Ballistix DDR4 with Micron E-Die that is said to overclock well. There's a 3200 kit right now at £70.42 direct from manufacturer. The closer to 3600 with tight timings you can push it, the better for Ryzen.

Also, which mobo have you found? Carbon Pro Gaming is available for a very decent price if you can stretch to it. The 3600 CPU should (hopefully) be around £200 and the 3600X around £240.

worth going direct to crucials site for those ram kits .

as danny has mentioned, your better with new ryzen, even if its less cores and the reason being- your gaming at 1080p with high Hz gaming screen! intel currently dominates this against current ryzen!
Ryzen 3000 should close the gap or be equal for less and offering more!

selling your mobo+ram+cpu in a tidy little package should help it sell well !

if you get the ram above, ryzen 3600 and b450 and prepared to do a little leg work for overclock - as x570 is the daddy for doing it for you but ££££3 - you should have a neat little system
