CPU LED Red!!

Hi Guys,

So I've just installed an Raijintek Ereboss in place of my old Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2, and now when I turn on my PC the CPU LED comes on red and stays that way (all other LED's indicate no problems). Nothing coming through monitor, keyboard and mouse stay unlit.

Motherboard is an ASUS M5A97 Evo R2.0 AMD 970

Rest of setup:
EVGA 600W 80 plus bronze PSU
GB Radeon R9 270x WF GPU
FX-8 8320 Black CPU
Kingston 120GB SSHD
2x Intel Patriot 8GB RAM
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB GH

My initial train of thought led me to think that the PSU was not powerful enough to handle the new cooler but i really don't know anything about these things.

Anyways, you guys got any ideas on what may be the problem?

thanks in advance!

You didn't remove the CPU did u? If not then undo the cooler slightly, quarter turn undone on each mounting screw

Nope, but i did have to remove the motherboard completely to install the cooler, including removing the RAM sticks. Just tried loosening screws to no avail unfortunately.

Re-check cables?

Fans don't add much to power draw, definitely not enough to tip it over the edge or you would have seen some overcurrent protections kick in from time to time even before the new cooler.

If it was the CPU fan not plugged in, it would at least get to teh post screen before telling you that its not plugged in. Maybe double check all the cables if Wazza's post doesnt fix it.

Amount of times i have forgotten to plug the CPU 4/8 pin and was trying to weight up all these possible but unlikely scenarios why it wasn't working when the problem and solution was so obvious from the start!

Re-seat the RAM too. Try with just one module in different slots too. If you can get it to post, you are moving forward!

Gah, tried different RAM sticks in different slots. No difference.

Tried loosening the cooler almost completely, with wiggle room i guess.. then gently rescrew. No difference.

Any last ditch genius ideas?

Check for bent CPU pins?

Would also give a dust with compressed air if you have any, in case something fell and is shorting the circuit some where out of sight.

If you try without a cooler, you can guarantee a dead chip. At least that way you know you are out of options but then you would have to buy a new CPU and it probably isnt even the problem.

Take everything out, including CPU from the socket, and put it all back. As above, check for bent pins/anything astray in the socket

yeah new cooler fans work fine. Just tried completely removing cooler, but didn't check for bent pins whilst at that stage, thought i hadnt got the bloody 4/8 pin all the way in but its fine. next stop i cpu pins i think. Fingers crossed, much love to you fellas, thanks for the help

If it doesn't work and you are in the Surrey area, i have a Crosshair Formula-z on a test bench at the moment if you think the CPU is the culprit and wish to try it in another board.

Just a quick update as i hate it when OP doesn't finish hings like these off. So it would seem as though the issue was in the 8 pin power supply after all. Should have paid more attention to Avenged's first post. Bloody typical!

Thanks for all the help gents.
