Well hello everyone, I have been reading the forums for a few weeks now and finally signed up.

I shall be upgrading my setup in the next month (trusty XP2700 since 2003)with what seems a tried and tested setup, E6300, DS3, Geil ram, etc as I am going to try overclocking for the first time. I already have a PC-7 waiting to go and am going to order the Corsair 520 or 620 watt psu when I can make my mind up which one.

Just got one question thou, if I overclock my E6300 to approx say 3ghz what effect will this have on it's expected life? I will use something like the ninja cooler but my brother who is a hardcore AMD fan says it will lower its life significantly.

I have yet to see a overclock affect a cpu's life, nothwoods were the only cpu's im aware of that showed side effects of overclocking. (snds)
Should be fine :)

It is true that overclocking significantly lowers the lifespan of your chip. However, since the lifespan of your chip is massive to begin with and you're only going to use it for an absolute maximum of 10 years I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Besides, the free performance so greatly outweighs the reduced life even if the chip only lives for 3 years that the arguement wouldn't have any weight even if it were applicable.

Oh, and if your brother is still a hardcore AMD fan given the C2D I wouldn't listen to him about hardware anyway.

This man speaks the truth ;) Welcome to the forums :D

i wouldnt worry about it even with a huge drop in the life span from overclocking you'll still end up retiring it before it dies. ive found in my experience cpus rarely die at all.

That's like saying you should stop supporting your favorite football team just beacuse they lost a match ;)

BUT if you're saying your favorite football team will win a match just because they're your favorite, not because they're the best... then yeah.

Haha I love contradictions. Whatever. :p
