CPU/MB/RAM Upgrade - Help

So my Dad wants to upgrade his PC a little. Unfortunately he has a budget of £250 to £300 at a push and would like a new motherboard, CPU and memory. He does some gaming, World of Tanks and Elite Dangerous primarily, internet browsing, light photo editing, etc.

My knowledge is pretty poor at this end of the spectrum and I'm looking for any suggestions for a bundle he could purchase. I think he'll be looking at an AMD build based on the budget? Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance. Oh and assume that everything else in his current build is good enough for now such as his GPU, etc.

James,

His GPU is a PCI Express compliant card. He's got a couple of Samsung 850's and capable power supply.

A new CPU, Motherboard and RAM can surely be recommended without knowing the ins and outs of his current build? It's these components that effectively define the backbone of the machine and can be interchanged with most GPUs, modern PSUs, HDDs. Unless I'm missing something lol?

Cheers,

He just wants the best bang for his buck really over these 3 components. Sure his GPU is a bit naff and also needs replacing but this will be a phased upgrade I'm afraid.

Thanks

The thing is that if his cpu/mobo are from the last couple of generations it may not even be worth upgrading or he may just be able to upgrade the cpu. Another thing to consider is that sometimes you get a much bigger boost by upgrading the gpu. Until you let us know what he currently has we have no idea on what is or is not a worthwhile upgrade.

How do we know what counts as an 'upgrade' if we don't know what he currently has bud? Potentially we might recommend something worse than what he already has installed...

Oh yeah lol... Good point, sorry I wasn't being flippant I was just confused. I'll try and get his current specs but just bear in mind that it's about 8 years since he last upgraded and that would have also been done on a budget lol. Anything would be better than what he has :D:D:D

I shall update once I get his current rig deets.

Thanks

This would be a good base to start from:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £234.48
(includes shipping: £10.50)

It's the latest Intel socket and uses DDR4 and I have upgraded from the basic Pentium to a much better i3. That ancient 5770 is going to hold any modern system back though. It does use the stock cooler though. If you wanted to add a cooler for lower temps and quieter running then you can't really go wrong with one of these:-

Thank you very much for your suggestions! This gives me something to go on. I'm going to see if he can increase his budget or alternatively wait until Xmas so I can contribute to his new build.

Thanks a lot :)
