CPU Missing Pins

I have an AMD Sempron 754 3000+ system I was given due to my amaturistic friend for some reason taking the HS&F off, whiping the CPU out and trying to pop it back in the wrong way.... better than that he actually put the HS&F back on and clamped it down.. Well quiet christmas so I thought I'd give the system some love. With the aid of tweasers I managed to straighten all the bent pins. That was a mission. However one was broken off before I started and the straigtening process lost me another.

So I was wondering what the best thing to jam in the ZIF socket was? Copper wire,? something else? The pins I'm missing are actually in the corners so are quite accessable and a solder may be workable.

I know this has been done before by people so I was just hoping for some pointers.

Cheers TMS

Ive heard of peeps simply making pins and sticking in socket and they touch when CPU is fitted, no need to solder then.

Yeah I have heard that. Was just thinking I'd check the best way to go about it :)

Have you tried to see if it actually works without them? A lot of pins on a CPU are redundant.

I Have thought about doing that yes. Infact I'll try that before I try to hunt down some copper wire in a fitting gage. My only real consern was that I could posibly fry something by doing that. What do you think?

Cheers for replys btw :)

There will be no danger in trying.

OK cool I'll give it a go and report back.

I always thought once a pin on CPU has broken its more or less bricked, though I did hear of someone returning a CPU back to AMD, because one or more pins were broken & they ended up getting a replacement. Dunno if this is true or not....

Ah, for the price of 754 cpus at the moment I could just buy another one. I'm more interested in seeing if I can get this one working again tbh. A little project :)

Hmmm well not looking good. Got the CPU in the mobo and the mobo hooked up to the PSU. Getting no power though. The PSU isn't even spinning up.. It should do for a dead CPU shouldn't it? Think I'll check the fuse in my power lead just in case, but maybe the mobo is dead also..

What do you think guys?

If he jammed the CPU in the wrong way around (and actually got some pins in the holes) and powered it up, its quite likely the CPU is dead and while unlikely its not impossible for it to have shorted out other electronics in the system...

That's a very good point. I think one corner of the CPU was actually in socket when I got it. I think it was actually the right way around when it got to me but god knows what he had done to it in his adventures.

Could do with knowing if a blown CPU would actually stop the PSU from powering up though, or if the mobo is blown.

I would quite like a "play system" for linux, folding and other endevers and this was going to be it but it looks like I'll be getting a 939 mobo and putting my spare bits in that. which tbh is probably the better option as I know my 939 clocks to 2.7ghz and I have 4x512mb of ballisticx 2-2-2-6 and I could only use 3 of them in a 754 mobo anyway.

A real shame though I have never had a play with a 754 system :( I think I'll play around with her a little longer just to make sure she really is dead.

My laptop is the living proof. It's a Mobile P4-M 2Ghz which lost a pin when I put it in a desktop mobo, it worked in fact I still managed to get 3.4ghz out of it on a desktop. It's still working today. As said lots of them are ground pins and do nothing so you might be lucky.

If the cpu is dead it will still power up I think just nothing comes up on screen.

Cheers I thought it would power up myself. The PSU is a brand new Jeantech 400w too. Not the best but a decent brand and looks pretty well made. I don't suspect that at the moment but I suppose it could be. I'll have to do a google and see if I can find which pins I need to cross to force a power up without mobo.

Was also looking around for a spec sheet on the 754 CPU pin layout to see which are the redundant pins but had no joy.
