how possible is it to use a seperate mobo, ram and chip for graphics processing?

any ideas?..............................I have a few but was wondering what other ppl thought.

A desktop CPU isn't really designed to process data in the same way as a GPU so although entirely possible it would not be very effective.

Interested though, why were you wanting to try?

Essentially you are describing a Graphics card.

Mobo = PCB
Chip = GPU
RAM = sure find it on Graphics Cards.

There are some specialized cards like Nvidia Tesla that are essentially Graphics cards but have no Monitor connection.

Even a modern CPU such as the i7 would slow to a crawl if suddenly expected to do graphics processing.

Intel has already tried this route with the original Pentium P60 saying that could do everything. Since then we have had dedicated Graphics cards, and seen the development of Video chips such as AVIVO and PureVideo functionality.

CPU just isn't good for calculating graphics.

well - i wanted to try as i can get a massive chip speed & ram and upgrade if i wanted - believe it or not i also came up with an idea that if i did that the gpu setup could also run an operating system in parallel to serve as a backup to my main board and use the chip mainly for graphics processing unless something went wrong - just trying to stretch the bounds a little!

thanks mdjmcnally, will look into the card...............why is a cpu not good for graphics then? in my little mind i don't see what would be different in the world of ones and zeros....................
