Thinking of upgrading my cpu and motherboard, but not wanting to spend too much as I don't really use the pc for gaming or stuff....

Tempted to get these:

XFX GeForce 8300 Socket AM2+ onboard graphics 8 channel audio mATX Motherboard

AMD Phenom X3 Triple Core 8650 2.3GHz Socket AM2+ 2MB L3 Cache

Totals up to about £94 which isn't bad I guess.

Opinions welcome!

Thats sounds like an alright bundle to me!

Might be worthgetting some input form some of the hard OC boys, you never know it may be a good overclock CPU !! Get some real performance for your money :D

Yes, what do you have now, what's your budget and what are you going to use it for? As a general rule of thumb i would stay well away from the Phenom Is, they were riddled with bugs, couldn't clock past 2.4 and were just generally worse performers than anything else on the market at the time.

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ on an Asus A8N-Sli + 3gb ram.

The mobo is a PITA. The n-bridge fan died many moons ago so Asus sent me a replacement but that is now getting noisy and it's in a stupid place so I can't replace it with a heatsink...

As I said I don't need super dooper power, I just want it to be a quick enough PC for day to day use - i'm not really into gaming on the PC or overclocking.

Phenom II tri-cores have 6mb of L3 cache too, rather than 3mb - total of 8Mb on chip.

Go Phenom II if you can. Basically on of the best CPU ranges AMD have put out in recent years IMO, and they clock like the old Bartons used to, it seems [IE easily and well!]; my 920 is in a XenServer box so I'm not bothering with clocking, but should I revert it to a normal machine, it's nice to have the option....

We're talking around £100 just for the cpu though when looking at Phenom II tri-cores :s

I don't really want to spend more than say £100-£120 odd in total as I only really use the pc for boring stuff. Would I be able to tell the difference? The most CPU taxing thing I probably use the PC for is extracting files.

Yeah and stupidly I just bought some more ram the other month so I guess i'll have to sell it on.

I have my eye on some 4gb corsair ram for the new 'build'.

I have a corsair 450w psu too and a Zalman CNPS7000C-CU Super Flower Socket 775 AM2 754 939 Processor Cooler.
