Hi Everyone,

Looking to get Mobo + CPU + Cooler + RAM for around £400.

Got Hard drive, DVD Drive etc that can be put in for now.

Will look to get a good GFX card at a later date.

Aiming to be a gaming PC, just doing it in steps.

Thanks.

What games do you play?

Mobo - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-356-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

CPU - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-244-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328

RAM - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-019-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1516

Cooler - I've left this open for you, there are a few choices you could make, with that mobo/cpu/ram coming in at £300, I'd say the Megahalems is a safe bet for a cooler - absolutely fantastic performance.

You could spend £200 on second hand good stuff that will play all games

P45 board, Q6600 (overclock it) H50 cooler, 4gb ram - £200
Then with the £200 left over add a bit and buy a 5850 or 5870

I assume you have a decent PSU already.

Here are a couple components list you may want to consider:

AMD based build

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz~ £136

Asus M4A89GTD PRO ~ £108

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-392-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

Has a split 8+2 phase VRM with cooling, has 6 SATA 3.0 ports and does symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X.

4GB 1600MHZ low latency DDR3 RAM ~ £100

If you are not overclocking go for low latency 1333MHZ DDR3.

Titan Fenrir ~ £33

This has been used by many OcUK forum members for their AMD builds. Many others have also been using the Corsair H50. If you are not overclocking the stock cooler should be fine but is supposed to be a bit loud.

The total comes to around £377.

There is also the Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H which gains USB 3.0 ability for a few quid more but according to Techreport the Asus M4A89GTD PRO is a better motherboard for overclocking and has more consistent overclocking performance.

However other reviews of the Gigabyte motherboard have been more positive.

Intel based build

Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz ~ £155

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5 ~ £120

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-203-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

Has an enhanced VRM with cooling and does Crossfire or SLI at PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X.

4GB 1600MHZ low latency DDR3 RAM ~ £100

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-180-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

If you are not overclocking go for low latency 1333MHZ DDR3.

Titan Fenrir ~ £33

If you are not overclocking stick with the stock cooler.

The total comes to around £408. If you don't need Crossfire or SLI you could go for a cheaper motherboard.
