I am interested in getting a CPU, mobo and RAM for a system I am building which will not need a quad or hex core CPU- a dual core would probably suffice- but I am very interested in overclocking one of the cores to be very fast. I'd like a good mobo for overclocking.

I havent kept up with the desktop component market for a while- my current rig is a E6600 with an Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo (excellent!!!) and I could overclock on air from 2.4GHz stock to 3.55GHz. I'd also need a lot (16/24GB+) of (fast) RAM- the more the better.

Could anyone recommend suitable components?

Budget doesn't really matter- but obviously I dont want to throw money away.

You're not going to find a dual which you can overclock as all the new tech is quad/hex. You'll need a 'k' version from Intel or an 'Unlocked/FX' chip from AMD. I would recommend this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £269.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-OC Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £179.99
1 x Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler - Orange £69.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2133HC11ADC01) £65.99
Total : £597.35 (includes shipping : £9.50).

You won't need any more than 8gb, 16gb would do if you are doing video editing, rendering or photoshop.

Depending on how much you are willing to spend, the X79 is a good platform for enthusiasts:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - OEM £469.99
1 x Asus P9X79 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £199.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit £89.99
1 x Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler - Blue £69.98
Total : £841.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

I'm a computer programmer- I specialise in real-time applications, hence the need for 16GB+ of RAM :)

(Thanks for the basket though!!)

Regarding the two processors, how does their performance compare with each other when both are overclocked? I dont really want to pay £200 for an extra few hundred MHz.

Also, I notice you went for 4x2GB- is memory quicker when it is split over more modules?
