cpu + mobo upgrade from 760

hi all

If i could get any advice from upgrading from the i5 760 (lynnfield 3.2ghz oc) with p55usb3. I exclusively game on this pc wide genre of games.
My other parts are:
r9 280x
be quiet 800 psu (i think its 800)
16gb ballistix ram
250 gb ssd
1tb wd green.
open to upgrading other components but dont think there is much need as the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu i belive.
Budget of around 500 but can push it to 1000 if i end up upgrading more. just fancy a splurge lol.

If you can squeeze some more out of your CPU (say to 3.6) then I'd say your GPU is the limiting factor in "general gaming". I have a i5 760 @ 3.6 with 4GB of RAM and a 1.5GB GTX 580 and I'm GPU limited in most games (well VRAM limited really) and can achieve 60FPS in GTA V with "high" and a couple "very high" settings.

Although if it more a want than need then I'll let other people who know more about new processors speak up!
 
As said the 760 when well clocked is still good, should hit at least 3.6, probably over 3.8 pretty easily.

However, if you really fancy an upgrade the 4690k at £169.99 isn't bad just now :) makes the £370 6700k look pretty stupid. If you wanted to go higher than an i5 then you'd be best going for a 5820k at £299.99 - it's not as good value for money as the i5 but is at least a big step up, going to 6 cores and 12 threads and should clock up nicely too and again makes the 6700k look ridiculous.
 
My 760 sits nicely at 4ghz but it's underwater. I think that my 980ti would benefit from a upgraded motherboard and cpu.

Not sure if this makes any real world difference but my motherboard is pci 2.0 rather than 3.0? Also if I want 6gb sata I have to choose 8x lanes or turn off 6gb sata for 16x lanes.
 
Thank you for all the replies guess il have a tinker with me overclock still a noob on that front see if i can push it higher. Surprised how long this processor has lasted if iam honest :).
Was a great purchase 5 years ago. (brought from here infact tho i lost the overclock from bios some how so had a tinker to try and see what i could get)

The i5 760 is still a very capable processor, especially when overclocked.

I ran one with my 290X and it definitely wasn't a bottleneck in anything I played.

Your 280X will be a bottleneck before the 760 :)
 
update did a lot of playing around yesterday and got a stable overclock at 3.8 (can def feel the diffrance) used the guide above linked by david bisset and that really helped thank you all for your advice greatly appreciate it.

cool will take a look at yours now zairs.
