Looking for suggestions for the above. Looking to reuse my case, psu (if compatible?), Hard drive and dvd drive. I know its not Mega bucks but not looking for a fancy gaming rig just a basic more up to date pc.

I need a cpu with built in gpu to start, i have been leaning towards Intel Pentium G4400 with 4gb DDR4 memory and a compatible board. This seems to be around the £200 mark .

I have looked at other options reusing my ddr3 memory but not sure.

What's your thoughts?

Current setup:

Asus M4A88TD-V evo/usb3 880g am3 atx mobo.
Amd Phenom 2 X4 955 black ed 3.2G (stock fan).
8GB (2x 4gb) Corsair vengeance ddr3 pc3-15000C9 1866MHz.
G force 8800GT (512mb). Lose
Samsung spinpoint F3 1 Tb sata2 Hd (os).
Sony Dvd Rw.
Coolermaster GX650w Psu ( i think 80 bronze cert?).
Cooltek G3 Htpc case.
Windows 7 HP 64 Bit.

The thing is that with a budget of only £200 there are very few options. You can't go with AMD because there are still no cpu's with onboard graphics as they have not released their APU's yet. You can't go for Intels latest Coffeelake cpu's because there are still no budget cpu's or motherboards in the lineup. That means Kabylake or Skylake which means DDR4 and the price for memory is just disgraceful. Only opting for 4Gb of memory is a non starter as you want more than that.

Taking that into account if I were in your position I would be looking at a secondhand i5 or even a i7 Haswell/Devils Canyon cpu and a H81/B85/Z87/Z97 chipset motherboard and reusing your current DDR3 memory.

I thought 4gb would be ok to begin with and add another 4gb+ later.

Prefer not to go down the second hand route if possible not knowing what you are going to get.

Thanks

Other option is x58 motherboard and an older i7 960 to 980 and re-use your RAM. Or go Xeon x56xx (overclocked as little point otherwise) either option would mean getting a separate GPU, but still all doable for under £200. It's all second hand now, but there's plenty of reputable ebayers out there, that's where I got all my components and so far so good. There's a massive x58 thread in the CPU section on it.

I concur with my fellow X58 brethren.^^

I spent around £135 on my X5650 CPU, X58 motherboard and 10GB DDR3 RAM ON eBay. It was absolutely worth it. And given your budget, you might be left over with 50 quid should you find a bundle. I.e. motherboard and RAM (like I did) or even all 3. I remember seeing a X58 Sabertooth, X56xx and RAM for £160 shortly after I bought mine. So there are deals to be had, you have to fish for them, so to speak.

I understand where you are coming from as these are more powerful parts for my money but I would still prefer to get something brand new as it would just be my luck to get something that blew up/failed a few month in.
As mentioned not looking for a gaming rig just average pc use with the option to upgrade down the line.

The 2 options I keep going over are.

Option 1.

Kaveri A10 fm2+ cpu or similar £90
Gigabyte board to suit £43.99
Reuse ddr3 memory

Total £135

Option 2. Leaning towards
(future proof?)

Intel Pentium G4400 1151 £50
ASUS H110M-K Mobo £48
4gb/8gb ddr4 memory £50/£90

Total £148/£198

Do you not think these would be suitable?

really you be best off spending that £200 on a 1050ti and a better quality psu, other than being newer and supporting ddr4, i dont see the g4400 bettering your current quad even if it is an am3 type to the justifying level.

Sorry I should have mentioned I’m trying to get a quiet as possible machine also which is why I was looking at onboard gfx.
I suppose I could replace the 8800 gt card with a silent (passive) card and get an ssd drive and maybe replace cpu cooler?

its the cooler you have that will determine sound, so just get a quieter cooler for your amd quad, buy a decent size ssd and to have the more up to date part, get a 1030, will be much better than the GT710.

What cooler would you recommend?
Seen the CoolerMaster 212 on this week only deal

Buy a GT710 passive GPU and a 128gb SSD, the SSD will make your pc seem like new

Was looking at the GT710 cards I just wonder if they let more heat into the system with having no fan?

And will more than likely get a small ssd drive for os and programmes

i couldnt recommend a cooler that might be quiet or quiet enough as i havent had many, plus its not too much of a big thing for me, however Noctua are meant to be well known for their silence.

if you plan on any sort of gaming with this then get the 1030, newer tech, be better than the 710, i have a gt 610 and from specs the 710 doesnt really offer anything more and mines 2gb and does okay if im not playing too demanding games, mines also passive and in a SFF slim case and given the lack of cooling this case has, i havnt had any heat issues, not all passive cards will be heaters, but it does help having a cool case setup.

Ok thanks for your help
Will look into quiet coolers

Cant see myself doing any gaming last pc game I played was Q3 Ctf
Online. Which I doubt is still going

Get a good coooler and clock your cpu to 3.9-4.0, put a cheap gpu in for £150 like a 1050ti ish, ssd and it will feel like a new pc

well you dont need to do any gaming, just the 1030 is much better than the 710 and being newer tech, the card offers more overall and longer driver support.

sure its lower watts to ? might not effect everyone but pennies are pennies

the information for the 710 seems vague when i looked for myself, ive even read one of the 700 range is dx9 for some reason, but the 1030 is meant to be rated at 30w, so very low consumption while offering newer and much better all round performance, its why i want one for my lenovo.
