CPU + Motherboard - another suggestion thread

Hi,

I'm looking for a replacement to a Core 2 Duo E6420, a G41 mATX motherboard.

This is for a spare machine that I'd like to upgrade and use for random projects.

I have a maximum budget £200, but I'd really rather not spend the maximum, I'm looking for the best performance/price ratio, as well as opinions on whether I should be trying to upgrade or not.

I'm not exactly sure what random projects I'll throw on it, but I would prefer something with 4 RAM slots and lots of cores. The motherboard would need to be mATX.

I'm also taking suggestions on what would be a good project to try and run on the upgraded machine.

I apologise in advance that this question seems a bit rambly, but hopefully you gus can help me.

What sort of processing needs? the i3 is perfectly adequate for most stuff. If you use heavily multi-threaded software, then might be able to squeeze in a quad core i5 of some sort.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure, this is why I was also asking for ideas of projects.

I figured that it'd be better if I tried to get some AMD with 6/8 cores just because I already had an i5 2500K. So that if anyone that suggested anything that was better on more cores, it'd work better. I already have 8gb of DDR3.
