CPU, Motherboard, RAM upgrade and PSU

I currently have a fairly old PC now (running Win7) with an Asus motherboard, E8400 CPU and 4gig of RAM with a GTX560Ti, but it has randomly started to completely freeze on me and the only option is to either power down or reset the system

Haven't figured out the reason for it, but Google suggests a few different things ranging from the motherboard dying to the PSU dying, so I am starting to look at options for upgrading

For the time being I will be sticking with the graphics card, putting it all in the same case (Antec Sonata III with 500W PSU) with the drives that I currently have (400gig boot drive, 500gig general use drive and a 2TB drive for storage/backups etc)

Having not built a new PC for such a long time now I am seriously out of the loop with component combinations so any advice on choices would be appreciated - obviously I am expecting any gaming performance to be limited by the graphics card but I don't have a lot of time for that these days hence why I am sticking with the same card for now with a view to upgrading that in the future when funds permit

So I would like some options on motherboard, CPU (i5 variant or are i3 versions up to the task these days?), memory combinations that would give me a 'new' machine and suggestions for a PSU that can handle both the current system but also if I upgrade the graphics card later in the year

Budget is undecided and depends on a few external factors but if I was buying today I would like to spend less than £400 for all 4 items if possible

Is your copy of Windows 32 or 64bit? are all your drives SATA?

Could you maybe buy the PSU first and see if it cures your issues? (as the one supplied with the case is old now and they degrade over time).
