I have £250 to spend on upgrading my CPU and Motherboard, but I am not sure what I could go for. Currently I'm using:

Intel Dual-Core E6600 3.06GHz
ASUS P5G41t -MLX3

I am hoping to upgrade to a quad core CPU, preferably an i5, (as I don' think an i7 is possible at this budget) and a motherboard with a suitable socket for this kind of CPU.

I would love for someone who has some experience in this field to give me some advice on which parts I should look for.

Any help would be much appreciated. :D

If you're wanting to overclock, you'll want a K processor and Z77 motherboard:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £179.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
Total : £281.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

If you are not worried about overclocking you can save a bit of money:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £161.99
1 x MSI B75MA-P45 Intel B75 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £53.99
Total : £227.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Getting DDR3 RAM is a must too. If you dont have any.

Ah. I was not worrying about overclocking, but is there a big difference in power between these two processors? And I do have 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM

The K version has an unlocked multiplier which makes it a breeze to overclock, the other doesn't.

Theres the difference. :)

You already have RAM then, Good. :)
