EDIT: Title screw-up. Should be "cpu FAN not spinning".

Pictured above is my computer with Intel stock cooler and E2180 (not overclocked) CPU & Gigabyte motherboard.

Started up the computer up today without the side panel on and to my shock/amazement, the CPU fan failed to spin up even after Windows had been loaded. I proceeded to load a game and the fan kicked in.

Basically, since I built my computer my CPU fan must have been off during every boot and just the metal heatsink cooling the processor. Is this healthy?

I've fixed the issue now it seems, by taking the fan off auto settings in the BIOS etc.

But still, bit worried I've been booting the computer like this for over the last month now.

If it was set to auto, it would have only been kicking in at a certain temperature, which is why it only came on when playing a game. It shouldn't affect the CPU at all, unless the temp was set too high.

kk, cheers for that. Yeah, hopefully the temp wasn't set too high. Never checked really, left it all on auto, etc.

Worried me though, that tiny little alu heatsink cooling my CPU all by itself.

Nothing to worry about. It's using Pulse Width Modulation, which causes the fans to start up only when a certain temperature is reached. Like jr said, when the CPU needed cooling, the fan was doing it's job.

i would reckon its fine to leave it on auto, as soon as you are in windows open up coretemp/speedfan to check your cpu temps, then maybe run a game in a window to put it under load and see at what temperature the fan comes on at to see if its a healthy one. my arctic frreezer pro 7 fan comes on about 10 seconds after i turn the pc on.
