So my friend has an old system,

Q6600 and an 8800gtx 4gb Ram

He is struggling to run Crysis, I have assumed that its the graphics card not being able to cope, would i be right?

Yes, in that system I'd say the 8800GTX is the biggest hold-up. It's a first-generation DirectX 10 card and while the 8-series are widely considered to have been amazing for their time, their time has also come and gone at this point I'm afraid. :)

He could sell the 8800gtx and get a little bit of cash back, check the members market to get an idea of what they are worth. Next thing is what budget he has, including the 8800gtx money if he decides to sell, then we can give you some recommendations. One idea would be to see if any HD 5870s are available in the market, I went from my 8800gtx to the 5870 and it copes with everything at the moment. The 5850 extreme in your sig is also available on offer at £100 at the moment.

I had a £600 1792MB GTX295 and it performed really bad on crysis. its such a hard game to acheive good settings. Id just get crysis 2 which is better and will run better on that system!

Yes, it's the card that holding him back. OCing that Q6600 to around 3.0-3.6GHz and paired with the HD5850 will give him better and decent FPS with the game.

Back in the day when crysis came out i had sli 8800gtx and a qx6800 which is like a 3 gig version of the q6600 and on max settings id get 15 fps.

To run it nice you need a i7 and a gtx 480 to run it maxed out and good fps you need 2 or more gfx cards because i doubt even a gtx 580 can run it max settings and stay above 60 fps.

With my rig in sig i run between 80 and 100 fps max settings to give you some idea how demanding crysis is to run.

Actually both are responsible. Even with a fast graphic card, the Q6600 need to be overclocked in order to reach "reasonable" frame rate.
