These are my current specs.

Intel Core 2 Dup E7200 2.53ghz @ 3.22ghz
Gigabyte P35-DS3L Motherboard
4GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Gold Edition
ATI 4850 512 MB
Corsair 450
Antec 300 Case

I am just looking to add either a new CPU or graphics card, what do you think would give the more bang for buck

1. Q9450

or

2. ASUS GTX 285 (might have PSU problems?)

Or any suggested alternatives? £250 is absolute max budget.

Well to be honest, unless you need a quad core or a faster graphics card for a specific reason I can't see either making a huge difference to you. Are you finding the system is slow in something at the moment ?

The Graphics card will help gaming more than the cpu upgrade and the cpu will help everything else more. Neither of them are likely to make your jaw hit the desk in amazement though. Well not unless you do a lot of encoding or rendering at least, then the quad core will make you cry ...that you waited this long :)

But with Direct X 11 cards and the new Intel I5's just around the corner (literally) I would wait a bit and see what's what if I were you. I believe the first DX11 cards from ATI will be launching September 10th and the Intel I5's and P55 motherboards and already on sale at a few places in Taiwan, so they'll be here very soon.

Thanks for the reply Moeks.

I was thinking that, was trying to play GTA4 on my system, and wanted ram my fist into somebodies stomach in disgust at how poorly it run, but then I am aware that it needs a monster of a system.

I'm also sure that I have read somewhere that GTA4 really improves under quad cores, but it would be silly just to buy one for one game.

Maybe you're right, I may just go and buy a half decent 22-24inch moniter and wait for i5 and DX11 graphics cards to come out.

agree with above, though if you do want to treat yourself now you could go for new case and PSU in preparation for upgrades when new tech is released, trasnfer your current system for now, something along lines of a antec 902 and PC P&C 750W (also available in black), thatd be about £180

As said wait for the new ati's & get a 5850 or a 5870 you may be able to get away with a 5870 with your psu because of 40nm chips needing less juice but thats just a guess & my guess is it will still be tight.
