CPU or MOBO limit?

Hi guys,

I've got an i5 2500k, AsRock Extreme4 z68 running 2.20 bios and 16Gb of Kingston Hyperx 12800C9 running on XMP profile. Recently I've pushed it to 4.5Ghz but if I go further I either get BSOD or it locks up on the W7 boot animation.

I'd like to push it further if I can but was wondering if I've reached the CPU limit or if it's motherboard related?

Probably CPU, maybe cooling. What is the voltage in CPU-Z? What PSU? Intel processors can only overclock using the multiplier and the bus clock is fixed at 100MHz so the board only uses standard clocks generally.

Not enough voltage for a stable overclock I would say.

From the sound of it you haven't touched the voltages at all? If that is the case I would be surprised at all with the BSOD and crashes.

I've got a H20 watercooler and I've checked the settings:

Vcore idle: 1.01
Vcore Load: 1.36

Temps Idle: 32c
Temps load: 62c

I've also got a 800w Corsair psu.

Temps are great.

Idle voltage is a little low. Is the Vcore in the BIOS on Auto? If so, id change that yourself to 1.3V or something.

Just tried fixing it at various 1.3xx settings and putting the Multiplier to 46. I'm still getting lockup/BSOD.
