CPU or Motherboard Failure?

I built a new system about 2 weeks ago, everything was fine until today. I went to bed, got up, go to turn it on and nothing.

I can't see the usual motherboard lights so i check the switch on the psu is on, that the power cable itself works by trying another, checking the mains supply by connecting another base unit to it (the base unit worked fine) then tried plugging another PSU into the motherboard. Still nothing. I'm thinking that the problem isn't power related.

I've heard that when a CPU stops working, the pc won't turn on. But does anyone know if the power light's on the motherboard would also not come on if the CPU stopped working?

I'm suspecting it's a motherboard problem, but i need to rule out if the CPU might cause the motherboards power lights not to come on

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The system:
Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55
Cruicial CT2KIT25664BA1339 4GB kit (2GBx2), 240-pin DIMM
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)
OcUK Value ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - Retail

Does the motherboard work outside the case? i.e. just cpu, ram, gpu? I have a similar issue and strangely, it does work outside the case, so that rules out mobo and psu problems.

Any chance of a short circuit? Loose screw inside the case etc.?

Actually, it turned out the be the PSU.

With other motherboards i have owned i was used to power lights lighting up on the board when the PSU was turned on, but on this motherboard i needed to turn the power switch on, on the the front of the pc on as well, which i didn't do initially.

Having one sent to me as i type this. Thanks for the help though.

there is another way to test PSUs by taking a paperclip and shorting out the green and black pins on the ATX connector and it should start up, just remember to disconnect hard drives and stuff.
