Hi guys

I have a 8320, Asus M5A97 PRO mobo, 2GB 7850, 650w XFX PSU, 8GB ram plus a Silver Arrow to keep it cool (and 2x 120mm case fans)

I dont think heat is the issue, but my problem goes like this... at 4GHz everything runs totally stable (stock volts) so I went clocking just running 10 passes of IBT, went upto 4.6Ghz @ 1.35v, then at 4.7Ghz the graphics driver would crash although it did pass IBT.

I went back to 4.6Ghz and tested it with Valley and noticed graphics corruption. At the time I had a 500w PSU so put it down to this, then I got a 650w PSU but exactly the same issue.

I'm now at 4.4Ghz @ 1.35v, it ran Valley for a good 30mins no issues but when I play BF3 the game will pause/crash for like 5-10secs every 1-2minutes, almost like its locked up solid but it just starts working again.

The motherboard is a few years old and not top of the line, I'm starting to wonder if I'm just asking to much from it?

Before you ask, the graphics card is currently back to stock, but ran for months prior to the new setup with an overclock.

Any ideas?

If it's fine with CPU at stock then I think the GPU can be ruled out.

It could be the motherboard VRM's that just can't cope as GPU's still take some of their power from the PCI-E slot, it might worth trying with a fan over the VRM area to see if that helps at all.

I've managed to get 4.4Ghz stable now by basically setting everything to Extreme in the BIOS. In fairness I did get the motherboard a little under 2 years ago, when an X4 @ 3Ghz was the max, ASUS have been doing updates to support new CPU's and the 8320 is officially supported but I guess the added frequency is just a leap to far.

It does seem linked to the actual CPU frequency too, because on the 'High' settings plus extra voltage, it would run perfectly at 4Ghz, just not at 4.4Ghz. Now I need to test how much of a improvement 4Ghz > 4.4Ghz actually is because I can run 4Ghz @ totally stock settings/voltages so may not be any point in clocking so far.

So next question, best AM3+ motherboard that doesnt cost the earth?
