CPU overheating

All of a sudden i get a report from my asus manager that ive high cpu temps. Never had any issues before. 3.4 i7 running at 4.2. It has a H80 watercooler on it, actually a OCUK H2Flo but rebranded so im led to believe. Anyone got any suggestions? Ive ordered a new cpu V6 kit and I took apart the old one and its integral pump seemed to work ok. All other temps and settings are fine. Anyone any ideas or suggestions? CPU was getting up to 85 before the system shut down.

Asus P8Z68-V Intel Z68 (socket 1155)
Intel Core i7-2600k 3.40GHz (sandybridge)
Kingston HyperX Genisis Grey 8Gb
HIS ATI Radeon HD6950 IceQ X Plus 2048Gb X 2 (Crossfired)

Basically an OCUK Ultima Mosasaur which came clocked by OCUK to 4.2GHz

How old is it? Is it dusty? Was it screwed it correctly? (it might have come loose overtime).

If it's old, thermal paste might have lost affect or something.

on my asus sabertooth it keeps telling me my vcore is 12.75 when i had ai suite installed, needless to say it was deleted straight away, ive also had it register crazy cpu temps like 375c

Yes, was using AI Suite. But to be honest ive never run it until it popped up a cpu overtemp message. The bios reports the same.

I considered the paste too. So cleaned with isopropyl and reassembled. still the same.

I will try Real temp when v6 arrives.

Anyone have any clues why my CPU is suddenly overheating. It was fine the day before and worked faultlessly for over a year. As I bought the V6 cpu kit from OC, i took apart the H80 to see if the pump worked. It did. Obviously the H80 is junk now. My concern is that with the new V6 installed that I might still have a cpu overheat message, so if it does what is the likely causes?

Note i never let it get above 85 before I switched it off.

use realtemp or coretemp to monitor your cpu

asus software often throws up messages about cpu running at high temps and it can be a false reading

Thanks Wazza I will. The bios reported the same though. Is this significant?

ps. Classic Robocop quote on your sig. :)

I've recently had the same issue. PC started to reboot when I'm ripping my DVD's to my NAS.

Vaccumed it today but im still idling at 69C?

any ideas?

I think ive read somewhere that after some time the Hxxx block gets a little loose and doesn't connect properly so you have to tighten the screws a bit..

Ive installed the v60 and i am now idling at 27degC. I think i may also have lost my OC factory over clock. No worries i'm sure someone here will help me re-instate it. So far so good tho. So my old H80 mustve gone **** up. The V60 kit is a nice piece of kit tho. easy to install, however a set of printed instructions wouldve been nice. Good job ive got a macbook too. If that was my only pc i'd be stuffed. Plus it never came with an ATX bridge. But some nice fella on here gave me a tip involving a paper clip. Worked a treat.

I'll monitor it for a few hours, update my bios and see how it goes under load. Plus i need to get Real Temp. Thanks for everyones help. :)

well atleast you found the cause,i thought it would be software, ive had those warnings on my asus z68 with ai suite, but have gone now with updates

OC'd it via the asus guide below to 4.2. Idle at 27-30, gaming (Far Cry 3) at 45 tops. Thought 42 cpu ratio might be better to start at than 48 straight away. Is this a good thing to do? System is stable. Played for 4hrs no problems. My board is a Asus z68 but i believe the process is the same. Please put me right if ive cocked up. :)

Now stable at 4.6GHz with my max gaming temp still never exceeding 50°C. My Mobo flatlines along at 30°C.

BF3 for several hours last night and 50 was the max but generally it remained between 45-50. This seems awfully cool for an overclocked i7 3.4Ghz 2600K. Is this normal or okay?

As the link in my post to hardforum suggested, I entered manual voltage to 1.415V. I followed exactly the procedure set out above as I dont really have a clue about these things just yet. I am still trying to understand what is involved from the myriad of info on this forum. I just wanted to restore my factory OC from overclockers that I lost when I reset my bios. (removed battery, pressed on until light on mobo never came on).

I will get to understand but lol its a tricky subject to come into cold.

1.415 seems rather high for 4.6ghz

what was it clocked to before? im at 4.5ghz on my 2600k asus v pro with 1.35v

if you want/need settings ill post them up later when I get time

im not using a fixed voltage im using offset of +0.020 and high llc

cpu uses less than 1v at idle and full 1.35v at load

EDIT: heres my guide but try with +0.020v offset and enter your own rams speed/timings/voltage

http://forums.tweaktown.com/asus/47510-asus-z68-v-pro-4-5ghz-bios-screenshots.html the boards are virtually the same apart from a few settings but will still overclock the same

Cool. Thanks Wazza. I will see how it goes with your settings and post my gaming temps later when I get home from work.

It was clocked to 4.6GHz before. I bought an Overclockers system a Mosasaur that came overclocked. But due to the issues in my first post I cleared my bios as part of trying to get my overheating issues understood. Now I know it was just the H80 cooler failing as the new V6 XSPC kit works a treat. Thus I am trying to get back to where I started. Oh and I updated my Bios to the current. I hadnt done that before and it was quite old. Generally I come from a school of 'aint broke, don't fix it'. :)
