CPU Overheating

Hello,

Just a quick query with a little story.

So turns out my old rig which I gave to my girlfriend, has a problem with the CPU overheating badly. Its an I3-550. Basically we didn't notice anything until Sunday night when playing Guild Wars 2. Game started bugging out and being unresponsive so she shut down.

Yesterday Morning she booted back up and text me(I was at work) telling me the game is running very badly. Told her to install a temp monitoring program which she did(OpenHardwareMonitor). After 5 mins I got a text saying its idling at 75c and whne she runs anything it shoots up to 95c. Obviously told her to not use pc AT ALL.

Anywho, got home tried cleaning cpu stock cooler that came with my i5 2500k. Applying more thermal compound and installed core temp to verify temps. Still idles at 74ish and reached a max of 105c under some load.

Now my query is, do any of you believe the CPU is now fried or could I put an aftermarket cooler(H40) on it and it be ok?

EDIT: CPU is running at stock 3.2/3Ghz. Never had any problems with it before, but I know GW2 can be very CPU intensive.

Sorry for story
Thanks

Yeah I would try a bolted on/screwed down after market cooler rather than the stock pile of crap Intel includes. Always hated their weak plastic legged coolers! Prone to snapping and not fitting securely when they appear secure.

More likely a cooler mounting issue now than a bad CPU. As already said push pin locks are hard to get seated properly unless you use them all the time and know how they work and feel.
