A Phenom is FINE.
Yea they are FINE... I meant the cores of the Phenom are not much faster, course the extra 2 cores will help reduce the bottleneck.
Thats believable seen as it was athlon X2 to C2Q, even X2 to C2D should see a gain ..

@OP it seems most new games (at high/real world res) are more GPU limited than CPU limited unless you are running top-end GPU. I would guess you are being bottlenecked by your Athlon X2 combined with your new gen 4870. A highly clocked core 2 dual should maximise its potential over the Athlon.
That said there is an interesting article here scaling CPUs with the top end 4870x2.
Interestingly the higher clocked quads appear to rein supreme over the dualies. That may be due to multi threaded support in the games but I don't have the particular detail though.
