CPU Pins?

I might be completely stupid but I was wondering does the amount of pins on a CPU/Socket affect how fast the CPU can be? (or at least contribute to the overall speed?)

I just noticed that speeds for CPU's tend to be faster with the more pins/contacts they have... 1336 > 1156 > 941/938(am3) > 775

not so.

socket 939 had more pins than 775 but the latter trounced 939 by the later years.

its the technology which has improved.
