Guys,

I'm still using a HP DC7800 which I've used for the past 3 and a bit years, currently its...

Intel Socket 775 X6800 @ 2.93Ghz (Stock)
4Gb DDR1066 RAM
WD Blue 160Gb HD (OS)
WD 640Gb HD
512mb 8800GT @ GTX Speeds
64bit Windows 7

It does exactly what I need it to do, I hardly ever use it for games now as have a PS3/Xbox 360.

I've come accross a Q6600 2.40Ghz processor for nothing which I could put in - However, after reading a number of reviews on the net I still can't decide.

Most reviews say that the X6800 gets better results in games e.t.c. but when benching programs such as CAD/Video editing the Q6600 is quite a bit faster.

I use my PC for Net, Website Design, Photoshop, Work, 2x 1680x1050 Monitors, A couple of VMs everynow and then for Labs e.t.c.

Question is - is it worth me swapping out my once big boy processor for the Quad core? (I didn't pay the £800+ price tag when it was new, I bought it second hand from the MM ;))

For a no cost improvement, it's a bit of a no brainer. Just clock the Q6600 to 3Ghz+ (which should be straight forward) and for stuff like Photoshop and VM's you'll have a nice little improvement. Overall OS usage will feel smoother going from dual to quad.

Sell and go for Ivy Bridge when it comes out if you really need to upgrade.

I was tempted to do this a while back, but everything runs perfectly not for me to warrant an upgrade. :) I think I'm getting old :p

With the current Motherboard (Being HP Intel Q35 variant) I have no options to overclock, so both will be run at stock.

Q6600 all the way.

As its 4 cores X6800 was great back when it first came out but 4 cores is better for most recent games & encoding etc etc.
