I haven been out of the loop with computing for a while now and don't know anything about what's good/rubbish now and my friend who always used to know these kind of answers hasn't a clue either any more.

Firstly, i have noticed there seems to be 2 sets of i7 and i5 processors on different sockets, 1155 and 1156. which is better and is it worth the extra money??

Also, is it worth shelling out the extra money for an i7 over and i5?? I mainly game but also use my computer for compiling.

Finally what the best chipset to get for the motherboard there seems to be a sea of options.

Thanks for any help, ken

extra: these were the two processors i was considering

i5 2500K is the best for gaming. The i7 2600K offers no improvement for gaming.

The main advantage of the 2600K is hyperthreading. If the complier you use can take advantage of hyperthreading then it may be worth the extra cost.
