Q6600 - £234.99 inc VAT

Abit IP35 Pro - £123.36 inc VAT

2gb Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300C3 - £64.61 inc VAT

Total inc delivery Total : £432.66

The Q6600 will drop below £200 inc VAT on the 22nd so that will get you below the £400 mark.
After having another look at this, would the Ballsitix 6400 be more suited?

Also are there any other combinations of mobo & ram that would be an acceptable alternative if a little more expensive (with more features such as better onboard sound, more usb ports)?

Well the Ballistix 5300 has been known to hit 1000mhz fine so you can save cash by just getting that.

The Asus P5K Deluxe has WiFi if thats a feature you want.

I think all the P35 boards have the same onbaord and the 680i boards have the same aswell.

The P5K Deluxe is a bit more expensive but it does have WiFi and more USB ports on the back than the Abit.

The P5K, IP-35 Pro and DQ6 are all nearly the same just difference in buncled stuff etc. I chose the Abit becuase it keeps you within your budget but if you can spare the extra £20 ten go for the Asus if its extra stuff you want.

The Asus and the Abit will both be suited to the Q6600 the same. Will probaiblyl just come down to the luck of the draw with the boards if you are overlocking the Q6600.

something to consider when your deciding how much to spend and what to buy, the processor you have now (s939 4800 x2) sells for round £150 on an auction site. sometimes £180. A good start towards your new rig.

The Ballistix 5300 is awsome:

All stable and I'm still pushing harder. Hoping to hit 1GHz soon.

well i wish it was as simple as that, something is wrong with my system atm and i'm guessing its either the cpu, ram or mobo, i have no other systems closely matching that i can test the stuff on to narrow it down.

lol omg i just dropped the cpu and it bounced halfway across the kitchen, so I guess Ebay is out the window then. Even if it wasnt broke it certainly is now.

Hahaha not a good move. Try it out mate, I once dropped a 80 GB IDE drive in the bath (don't ask), I dried it out for 2 days on the windowsill and it only went and worked. In fact it's sat in an external storage bay right now with some backups on.

oh dear :( i bet someone would still give you quite a few £ for it on an auction site. I saw a run-over PSP once get £40something and it was totalled on the pic.

OK I'm gonna go with Azza's original suggested spec what cooler is recommended for it, would this be ok - Tuniq Tower 120 Blue LED CPU Cooler on that mobo with an 8800GTX in an Eclipse case?

Yes that would work mate.

Or go for the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme both are very good coolers.

I would go for the thermalright myself. Think it may be a bit of a better cooler plus it doesnt take as much rom up.

I've just kept the stock cooler for now, see how it does, I aint gonna push it to its limits by any means as stability is more important but its still nice to get a little more outta it. If I feel the intel cooler aint up to its job i'll get an aftermarket one later on down the line. Again thx for everyone's help.
