I have the CPU and memory combo in my sig with a 4090. Obv I'm CPU bound and I want to play MS FS2020 4K and new games faster. I need to upgrade MOBO/Memory/CPU asap. The games I currently play RDR2, GTA 5 are fine and the 5960X is holding up remarkably well at 4K. Concerned a 7800X3D with only 8 cores will soon be like the old 4 core (I have kept 5960X 8 years) and begin to struggle when next gen consoles arrive. I suppose what I want is a 5900X 3D with one 8core/16 thread 3D cache CCD and one 4 core/8 thread CCD. That would tick al the boxes and mildly 'future proof' against upcoming games that use more than 16 threads/cores.

I'd say you're looking a bit too far ahead there, games that need more than a 7800X3D are a long way out and the big selling point of AM5 is future upgradability, so maybe in the future (* without needing a new board) you can buy that CPU, but the 7800X3D should be more than enough for the time being.

13700k/13900k = 8 performance cores, efficiency cores not really gaming oriented

7950X3D = 8 cores with 3D cache (slower clock), 8 cores without (faster clock)
7900X3D = 6 cores with 3D cache (slower clock), 6 cores without (faster clock)

7800X3D = 8 cores all with 3D cache (slower clock)

7900X/7950X = 12/16 cores without 3D cache (faster clock) - still slower in games than the 13700k/13900k

so whatever you buy...still really it's at best a 8c/16t part lol

Move to a 5k monitor. Lean on the graphics card and be happy.

AMD will likely offer a 7950-X3D-X2 if they feel the £5k gaming console market can sustain it.
