CPU runs hot when pushed!

Hi, I need a bit of advice.

Im using a Athlon 64 3700+ CPU that is not overclocked. (2.4ghz)

The problem is when Im running a chess engine that pushes the CPU hard, the PC shuts down sometimes and then reboots itself.

I think this is because the CPU is running hot when pushed hard. I downloaded some softwear to monitor the temperatures, and found that the CPU temperature is reaching around 73C while running the chess engines. The normal CPU running temperature is between 40-45C when the CPU is not pushed hard.

There is a small fan on top of the CPU running at around 2600rpm. And a large fan on the case.

What i want to know is, will this damage my CPU running between 70-75C when its pushed hard? ...as I heard the max temp for my CPU is 70C.

Ok thanks for all the advice.

The first thing im going to try though is moving the pc tomrw to a place with more ventilation room around it, as since ive tested it with my bedroom window wide open its running a little cooler 66C max.If i can get it down to about 55C max just by moving it a little, that will do for now :D

Ok, Ive cleaned the fan and moved it to a better ventilated area, and its not going over 65C now. Still hotter than it should be though.

I read somewhere on the net that theres an issue with some of the Clawhammers giving false temp readings untill You do a bios update on some motherboards, anyone know if this is right?

Another thing that makes me think it could be an incorrect reading is the speed which the temperature drops again after the CPU becomes idle again.

It drops from 65C to 42C in a few minutes  , where it takes my mates Athlon 64 3200+ 5 mins to drop from 58C max when pushed to 46C (both now run at under 40C idle).
