cpu spikes causeing sound issue?

a friend has an acer laptop, model 8204wlmi. as per the title whenever the cpu usage goes above about 15-20% audio playback, whether it be dvd, audio cd, skype or the such goes all 'wonky'. best explanation is that it becomes stuttery and echoey (<< is this even a word??) but i think you get my drift :p.

currently downloading latest audio drivers but any thoughts as to what else could be causing the problem?
