Cpu % spikes due to a bad app?

Something is causing my cpu at random intervals to be utilized 100% and this sort of locks up my mouse etc.
I can see the sudden spikes but I can't see which app/service is causing it as various changes are occurring at the same time on that task manager window.

Is there any app that can tell me which app at times is using so much power? In way that you can pin point to it easily.

This seems to be the same as what's in the task manager. It doesn't really pin point to me whats the application that freezes my mouse

Well am not impressed. At the same time maybe am being thick.

Something is driving my cpu usage to 100% but i can't make out what it is. I do watch the graph and processed like a hawk and I can't see what it is.
When I hover the mouse over the red portion of the graph I only see "System 4" all the time. I look at the detailed view over at the panel and I can't see which process is causing the problem

Is there a program that can pinpoint to the service that is going crazy?

Thanks for the links jpaul. I managed to find the culprit and it is BitDefender. As soon as I disabled it, it stopped locking up my system.
