Hi All,

Was making the X6 Build but the HSF got in the way of putting the HDD in, so I tried to remove it but the CPU came out along with it (luckily there are no bent pins or anything)

No I have no way of getting the CPU back in, as the locking mechanism gets tangled up in the heat pipes. I need to remove the HSF from the CPU, but it is stuck, completely stuck!

Please help!

Thanks,

Which thermal compound are you using to act as a heat transfer from the cpu to the HSF? If its paste, it wont be properly "stuck" it'll just be kinda sucked onto the bottom of the HSF due to pushing all the air out of the stuff you use when you seat it and then give it some heat. If its something like arctic silver, you can gentle twist the sides of the cpu to remove it without issue.

However if you used epoxy, aka glue, you have a problem!

Just managed to remove the MOBO, the standoffs were coming out with the screw etc, I have now given them a turn with the spanner to make sure that doesn't happen again.

If I do remove the cpu from the HSF, what do I do with all the grey heat transfer stuff?

Thanks

Heat will usually soften most heatsink pastes, so yes try a hairdrier or a hot radiator (both will still be cooler than the CPU is designed to cope with).

To clean the paste you can either buy special TIM cleaning solution, or just get some 90% isopropyl alcohol (aka IPA, not the drinking kind!). IPA will help remove any oils/paste and will evaporate cleanly without any residue of itself so is great for cleaning loads of things.

I had a similiar problem. Literally wrenched the cpu out the socket. I used arctic silver cleaning solution. And like the previous post I carefully applied some to the join between the cpu and hs and it eventually came free. Warming it seems a better proposal.
