I've got a Phenom II X2 thats unlocked to quad, stock voltage etc no overclock that has been running no issues for about a year now. Normally it would max out on HWMonitor at about 55 degrees under load from 3d rendering etc.

Left an animation rendering overnight woke up and my pc was off, bit odd. Turned it on and everything seemed fine started the render again and it shut off again after a few minutes. HWMonitor only went to 55/56 as normal. Turned it back on and it was reading 61 degrees under no load  Has slowly crept down to 44 now but that is still a fair amount higher than it used to be without load.

Ideas?! This is a really bad time as ive got assignments due in this week so help much appreciated.

Is the CPU fan still running?

Is your PC full of dust?

Have you tried reseating the heatsink and reapplying the thermal paste?

I can only guess the thermal grease has either seperated too much or dried out completley.
Try reapplying some more to start and see what happens.
