CPU support for laptop..

I've got a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop with a 2.8GHz P4 in it and was wondering what CPU choices there are to upgrade..

The current chip is a 533MHz bus 2.8 Northwood 130nm with 512k cache. I have found a 3.2GHz mobile P4 Northwood 90nm with 1mb cache going for peanuts and was wondering if this would work or is 3GHz the max I can go to? The chipset in the laptop is an I855GM. Not sure if my board supports HyperThreading so if I got a CPU with HyperThreading, would it just disable it or would it not work?

Realistically, the differences between the two CPU's won't be huge. Additionally, if the new cpu does indeed have 1mb L2 cache, it'd be a Prescott and personally I wouldn't drop one of those into a notebook as the heat output on those are a bit higher than on the northwood.

If I recall correctly, it were only the Intel 865's upwards that had support for 800FSB CPU's

I know there won't be a huge difference but higher numbers look better! Plus the chips can be had for peanuts nowadays.. I'm not too worried about heat output, but the one I can get hold of is still a mobile P4..

So anyone know if I need to keep to the older 130nm CPUs or will the newer 90nm CPUs work with my board?

Have got hold of a 90nm 3.2GHz for about £12 but its not here till mid week.. Might order some others if that doesn't work, don't even know if the board supports 3.2GHz!

sounds similar to my dads it has a 2.8 Northwood 533FSB without HT. i believe it only takes 533FSB chips, not 800. so the max chip is a 3Ghz i thought when i checked it up.
actually just checking wiki about it, it reckons theres at 3.2Ghz with 533FSB,

Yeh I managed to get a 3.2GHz 533 CPU.. Hopefully it works, if not it only cost me £12 so can stick it on the Bay! The one I got was the 90nm version though with 1mb cache.. If it doesn't work, I'll track down a 130nm one!
