CPU temp reached 85°C

Somewhere, in a field in cheshire... alright!
Hello

The PC shut off and restarted twice today (watching a DVD) and once yesterday (playing Stalker Clear Sky) so I ran PC Probe II to keep an eye on the temps. At one point the alarm went off and I noticed the CPU temp had reached 85°C (I'm assuming this is too high)

I switched the PC off and left it off a while. I'm back on it now and the temp is at 45°C but I'm a bit worried its going to get high again when its under load.

I'm on an original Intel stock cooler. I was looking at coolers for socket 1366 and I saw a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler for £22. Would it be worth getting it or should I just take the stock cooler off and clean it, its never been off in five years. Does the problem lie somewhere else?

Thank you for any help.

No, I'm not overclocked at all. I've only ever used stock coolers. Might go for the Hyper 212. I've not got a massive case, it's quite a big cooler isn't it?

Case is a Lian Li but I can't remember the model. Dimensions are 21cm wide, 49cm length and 44cm high. It must be 10 years old at least. Ran Malwarebytes but it found nothing so that's ok

Looking in the case I don't think the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo will fit. Can anyone recommend me another good cooler for socket 1366 under £30.

In the five years the heat sink has never been off but I have vacuumed dust from it best I could. Yes, the fan is working. I think I'll get a new cooler, only ever used stock coolers but have never overclocked. I was looking at the Hyper 212 Evo but I think it'll be too tall to fit in my case. Anything smaller?

What's a good thermal paste to get to use with a stock cooler?

Is a can of compressed air the best way to clean a heat sink?

I'm going to replace the thermal paste and put the Intel stock cooler back for now. I've got some Arctic MX-4. It'll be my first attempt at re-applying thermal paste and I'm a bit worried about it. There's so many people saying different things - pea, line, X, to spread or not to spread, that is the question. I've been watching videos on YT and it would appear a lot of people don't know what they're doing. Any tips guys?

Right, I'll have to buy some rice :p

Will the paste miss the corners of the CPU doing it that way or does that not matter?

I did the job on Tuesday night and I'm still reaching 80°C at times in games. Idle temp is around 40-45°C which is not much better than before.

As it was the first time I'd ever applied paste is it worth having a look to see if I applied too much and if so put a little less on to see if that improves things?

Yes it was all cleaned off and re-applied and the heat sink and fan cleaned. I'll have a look at it to see if I put too much on and re do it again. Failing that I'll look into getting an aftermarket cooler but I won't be changing my case so I'll have to settle for one that fits, the hyper 212 Evo won't.
