My e2140 system seems to run quite hot (32 degrees idle) at stock voltage with the stock heatsink. I have just applied some artic silver to it to see if that would help and it didnt make any difference, actually it made it 1 degree hotter!

Is this temperature ok for the set up or is it too hot? dont really want to start overclocking it if the temperatures are bad at stock.

my e6600 is 24 degrees at the same voltage although that isnt on stock cooling.
 
That seems about right for idle however you really want to be testing the temperatures at full load.

Download SnM or Prime95 and report back with load temps. Anything under 55 is fine.
 
Temperature sounds about right for a stock heatsink, whats the temp like under load.

Belongs you keep under 60c you should be fine.

sorry should have stated the temperatures under load, after 30mins of orthos level 10 it was at 68 degrees so I stopped it :(
 
everest, coretemp and speedfan as they are the only ones that I can get working in vista x64. They all read the same within a few degrees.
 
That is pretty hot, how much arctic silver did you apply? If it's too thick it can actually hinder heat transfer.
 
I tried to replicate the picture on the artic silver website the best I could so I dont think there is too much. I have started orthos again and it is steadly rising, after 7 mins its got to 54 degrees.
 
After 20mins of orthos it seemed to have settled at 53 degrees which I suppose is ok, I was planning on seeing how far I could push the chip but maybe not with these temperatures :(
 
54°c is fine :confused: just all depends what you're happy with, i'd quite easily be happy with a cpu that hit 70°c tbh... don't have to worry about throttling untill 85°c, so, in theory, you wont need to worry untill u hit 85°c....

Interesting point, I was under the impression that 60°c was a safe maximum. If I get time one weekend I might try it in my main system in my sig to see what I can get out of it.
 
mine runs regularly (1.55 Vcore + Arctic 7 Air cooler) - at 50C idle ish - and about 63-64 max under load

seems perfectly stable - I'm happy under about 68 or so

check out the temps of the Q6600s etc ... overclocked ...

really they are not much different - so its not by magic that they can cope with higher temps than the dual-cores ... just the dual-cores happened to be quite cool - and then everyone got concerned with keeping to low-ish temps ...

throttling temp really is 85C - so as long as below there (with some margin) then you're fine IMO

good point :)

I do wonder sometimes if the poor people like Crucial have a lot more RMAs just because we all (well I do !) - do so many long runs of Orthos - that is ultra-stresses things like RAM in ways that would be fairly abnormal for normal usage
 
I decided to take off the cooler and resit it incase it wasnt on correctly and by the look of it I messed up when lowering the cooler onto the chip, I cant have done it perfectly flat as there was no artic silver at the top or the chip where it should have been :( I decided to not follow the artic silver instructuctions and follow the advide of someone in another thread on here and used cling film on my finger to spread it all out evenly over the chip. Temperaturs have dropped a fair bit now, load is at 45 degrees :)
 
Yeh, C2D are different so anything under 70/75 is fine. It was AMD's that were safe until 55ish!

This is the hottest my E2140 chip got, still ran everything stably and wasn't throttling as far as I know?

These temps were due to my rear exhaust fans not working.

I tell ya what I had the same problem.. Put AS5 on my Q6600 and the temps went up 3 or 4oC..

I thought ide leave it a few days to see if the paste would settle and it made no difference..

I had some cheapo crap paste that I purchased from RS Components a few years back and that worked better for some reason..

Dont ask me why I aint got a clue..
