Im going to upgrade my singly core cpu to dual core and I was wondering what kind of speed increase I would get from dual core compared to single core? I play games and do some video encoding occasionally...
I was thinking of getting socket 939 opteron 170,175 or even 180 since they are quite cheap and I cant get hands on 939 x2 Amds...

if you encode you'd get a nice boost.

same with any application that is multithreaded. the optys are good cpu's, so games will see a benefit as well.

I upgraded from a 3500+ Venice core (which was a poor clocker, I must say) to an E6400 (clocked to 3GHz on stock cooler). The difference in all applications is very noticable as far as I'm concerned.

That also required a new mobo and ram.

Theopty 170's are nice Cpu's and you willnotice a nice speed increase.

My old opty 170 clocked to 2.8ghz @ 1.375v

I wasn't advocating buying a new MB and RAM - simply trying to highlight the advantages of multi-threaded computing.

But comparing a C2D and S939 is not really a far comparison.

In fact comparing C2D with a dual core S939 is not really a fair comparison.

The two are entirely different technologies.

How did you come to that conclusion? They're both ALUs for x86 architecture which fulfil precisely the same role. But hey... :p

Anyway, enough of the semantics - point taken, even if you haven't really grasped what I was trying to say.

I had a 3500+ overclocked to 2.5ghz. Bought a x2 3800+ at stock it was good but overclocked to 2.6ghz it flew. Enjoying it a lot. Especially since its more and more games and applications use dual core tech.
