CPU too hot!

Hi, Ive just finished building a computer with a P35C-DS3R, a Thermaltake Soprano case and an E4500. Nothing is overclocked, but the core temp (according to the BIOS) is 44C and the CPU temp is 69. Im only using Intel's stock cooling, but surely at stock speeds this should be enough. Does it just need time to be broken in and melt down the thermal pad? Thanks.
 
Yes, it does need time to break in, but your temps shouldn't be that high to start out with.

Maybe re-seat it / check it's on properly?
 
Yea, I did have a few problems getting it seated properly. Need to try that again tomorrow. Will it be a problem that it has already been on there now, so if I remove it, and the thermal pad has already melted, will I need to put more thermal paste on it?
 
If it was me i would put a new splodge of thermal paste, and remember you only need to put a little bit on, pea sized would be enough i think.

Do others agree?
 
Definately will need a new application of thermal stuff. A pea-sized splodge sounds way too much. Spread across the core as thinly as possble else it'll squidge everywhere when you put the heatsink on.
 
I dont think Im gonna go for the Arctic Freezer 7. I was looking at it anyway, but really cant afford it. What should I use to clean the chip?

Also, it runs about 8C cooler with the side off, at around 62. Is it ok to run it like this for the day to install drivers and stuff until I get my thermal paste?

The core temp (with the side on) is 44C. Is this ok, or too high?

The weird thing is that it still feels like it is blowing cool air out-much cooler than my old desktop or my laptop.
 
Personally I always scrape that nasty thermal block of rubbish off the bottom of my CPU heat sinks before installation, AS5 is your friend!

44c is fine but 62c is high for stock, core temp = cpu temp i thought :confused:
 
That sort of temp is almost like you are using the heatsink but not the fan. It should be way lower than that at stock. If it isn't seated properly then that would account for it. The stock cooler should be plenty good enough if not overclocked.
If you get similar readings in windows then it wouldn't point to a faulty sensor, but worth checking.
Might be worth checking the BIOS vcore, in case it is set massively high overvolting the CPU.
Also you say the temps drop substantially with the side open, what sort of case cooling do you have?
 
I would dump the stock cooler imho. I hate intels design, those plastic push clips are a right pita. I found a bolt on cooler works great but it does mean stripping the board out which is a bit annoying but its defo worth it!
 
Ive cleaned off the old thermal pad and am putting some Akasa thermal paste on it after I eat! (they didnt have any AS5 in my local ****** :( ). If this doesnt work, what would you recommend doing? Just buying a new HSF? If so, which one? I dont want to get a bolt on one as I dont trust myself to fit one!
