I went from an 8350 to an R7 1700 for 4K and VR

If you decide to stick with AMD make sure you get memory that you can run at 3200 minimum with tight timings.

I would recommend the 8700k over the 8600k, but it isn't in stock.


The 8600k offers better gaming performance, but with streaming + gaming will struggle compared to the 1700. The 1700 plays games worse, but will stream + game better due to the extra cores and threads. You could save £50+ on the 8600k bundle by getting a cheaper motherboard and CPU cooler, although temps will be higher and you likely won't be able to overclock as high (which is where the 8600k would shine v 1700).​

If you're going Intel with that budget and usage, you'd want an i7 8700k. Unfortunately it's out of stock everywhere and price-gouged. It is the best gaming CPU for 1080p right now though, so could be worth waiting for.

Yes, especially for 1080p.

An i5 8600K will do fine if you are just gaming. If you go with the i7 then I would wait for the price to settle down. No way a mainstream cpu is worth over £400 even with 6 cores.
