Hi there guys I'm curios as friend of mine want to upgrade their cpu but note sure if it's worth it he currently got i7-980X + Asus Sabertooth motherboard. Is it worth it? If so what cpu and how much can he sell it for ( I know it's against forum rules so if you cant answer it I will understand)?

He won't be able to just upgrade his cpu, a 980X is x58 platform, the only cpu above is an 990X which wouldn't be worth changing to. He would need to buy a new cpu, mobo and RAM.

Whats his budget? What does he use his pc for?

His budget is roughly £350 + whatever he gets from sale of 980x with mobo and ram. He uses his pc mostly for video rendering and casual gaming.

A 980x still has life in it especially if overclocked high maybe he should overclock it if not already.
A 980x at 4.5 ghz is still good enough the gains wouldn't be amazing a 980x is as good as if not better than a 2600k I thought ? as it has more cores threads isn't it basically as good as a 2600k but with with 6 cores 12 threads ? when clocked to 4.5 ghz

Okay I will tell my friend to overclock it. He just have stock cooler that came with cpu that looks weird :P Any recommendation on new cooler max £60

Noctua d14 or d15 will see him through countless builds they release new brackets for free should new hole spacings come out, yea get that 980x to 4ghz + it will still be a beast
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/287?vs=142 as you can see here it's still a great chip and that's not even overclocked it does seem like a 6 core 12 thread 2600k.Had you said should i upgrade from 2600k to newer people would tell you not worth it so....

Needs to check his case to see the cooler height restrictions and how tall the ram is etc though these big air coolers need like 160mm + case clearance and low profile heatsinks on the ram if you want to run 2 - 3 fans as one fan sits right above the ram
