CPU upgrade for office machine?

Hello,

Just a very quick question.

I've been offered the opportunity of upgrading the CPU in an office system which is used for email, surfing, word processing, desk top publishing and a small amount of video/music - but no games.

It currently has an AMD64 3200 CPU and 1GB memory, and I've got the option of swapping the CPU over to an AMD64 3400.

As the machine is only used for office based applications would there be any noticeable improvement from a CPU upgrade, or as I suspect would it just be a waste of money as the current CPU is already more than up to the job?

Thanks for replies :)

Doubt you'd notice any difference but if it is free ;)

Thanks.

The 3400 has been offered to me for £45 but then I could sell on the other chip.

Probably not worth the hassle as the 3200 might already be overkill for an office machine?

That's Socket 754, right? I doubt you'll notice a huge difference. Probably upgrading the RAM to 2GB might yield a bigger/better result

Yes hp7909 its a socket 754 system, about 2 years old.

Thats more or less what I was thinking. If the system ever does seem to feel its becoming limited an upgrade to 2GB memory would be more effective than a CPU upgrade bearing in mind what the system gets used for.

For that price (& if brand-new) might as well go for it. Extra speed might not be much, but you might be 'extending' the life of the machine :)

Well I guarantee you'll not notice anything in office applications....it sounds like more trouble than it's worth IMO.

Thats the opinion I've come to as well gurusan.

I think I'll leave the CPU alone and go for the memory upgrade when an opportunity arises.

Thanks for replies everyone ;)
