I built a 3300x into a x570 meaning with a when it came out absurdly cheap, even pre-ordered it months ahead like a madman, been meaning to upgrade to a "real" cpu for ages and send the 3300x to retire with my old gtx960 and hand it off to my family in a small case.

But pandemic/chip shortage/life happened and it just sat there, being "good enough" but now I have an 3060 the 3300x seems like it might be the limiting factor.

is a 5900x a good step up? Yes it leap frogs the 3060, but its one of the better x570 cpu's for power efficiency (performance per watt) according to benches I found(?). Meaning, it'll be using less electric for now, until it can stretch it's legs later.

Maybe I am over thinking it, but i paid for a x570 for the upgrade path, and I'm just sort of not doing it now and I'm getting fomo:rolleyes:. Non of the parts would ultimately be wasted as I'd end up recycling the 3300x down the family tech hierarchy.

5800X3D is due out in the next few months, it will be overkill for a 3060, but will mean you are covered for future GPU upgrades.

I read that was looking like a paper release, meaning it'll get scalped to hell, but that said, I'm in no rush and happy to observe the inverse pc parts price bell curve for that sweetspot.

I doubt it'll get scalped unless it is much better than ADL from Intel. As for paper release, you can only wait and see how many will be available, if AMD hold true to their historic launches they will force retailers to supply at MSRP on day one and for at least a week following, so you could always try and grab one then, or at least get an early pre-order in.

Your other option is a 5800X, which has started hitting £280-310, prices seem to be dropping weekly.

I think there's a good chance of people getting a 5800X3d.

Many people have already got zen 3 processors and I think at this stage of AM4 many will wait until the new platform releases.

The only thing that would cause a shortage is if the increased cache benefits mining greatly.
