Hi all, looking to upgrade our old family pc, got a Gigabyte z77-ds3h mb skt 1155 and want to upgrade the cpu. What do you recommend and where is a good place to buy from, as I am aware it is an old socket type.

Going from a lowly Celeron the worrld is your oyster as anything is going to be better than that. The i7 3770k is the fastest cpu you can drop in that board plus because you have a Z series board you could overclock it as well. The CPU support list for your board is here. The lists for Rev 1.0 and Rev 1.1 of the board are exactly the same. You are stuck with whatever you can pick up second hand from the likes of Ebay but don't overpay. There comes a time when the price is too high and it would make more sense to upgrade to a modern platform.

If you want cheapo, and to OC, 2500K/3570K will do nicely, about £35-40, don't pay more than that. If you want to max out the board then a 2600K/3770K, but for some reason (probably because they are still good) they sell for about £100+

If you don't want to OC, then drop the K of the ends of the names above, and pay less, than the prices given. :)

Not interested in OC, i7 prices are kinda daft for an old cpu, over £100 on Ebay, there are some decent priced i5's though, would they be good? PC gets used for web, online gaming and a bit of video editing.
