i have an old advent 7000 which has a 1.3 celeron cpu, i decided to upgrade the cpu and memory, i bought a second hand cpu INTEL PENTIUM M 1.7Ghz CPU 400MHz SL6N5 off an auction site FOR £6, i installed it to the laptop with a little heatsink paste used, the laptop boots into windows xp fine and works ok i can open my computer etc and its a bit snappier than it was however after 5mins of use the laptop freezes and i have to hold the power button to shut it down.

does this sound like a faulty cpu or is it possible the cpu wont work with this laptop ? ill mention i have not upgraded the ram yet so its nothing to do with that.

LAPTOP SPEC

Could be one of a few things. It doesn't sound like it's entirely incompatible, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten past the POST.

1. It could be a power issue; if the pentium is drawing more than the celeron. Possible solutions would be downclocking the cpu (if your bios has the options) and see if it has the same problems. Dim the monitor and stuff like that: If other areas of the laptop use less power, then there will be more available to the cpu.

2. It could be a temperature issue. Have you checked them? The cooling designed for the celeron might not be good enough to cool the pentium, so it crashes when it overheats.

3. Possibly a duff chip. I have ruined components from overclocking accidents, and generally they still work, but they crash every 5 minutes.

thanks jimbob
i have tried to check the temp of the cpu but cpuz does not support this cpu and speedfan does not show anything for the cpu either.

you could be right about the power issue, the usb mouse is stopping working so i dont know if the usb port is crashing as the touchpad still works, ill try a ps2 mouse and disable any hardware im not using and dim the monitor. There is no settings in the bios to alter clock settings its quite basic.

CPU-Z should support it....it used to read my old Pentium M fine. What's the spec of the old Celly?

hi i got mixed up its coretemp that does not support it, cpuz does not give you the temp though and the original cpu was a - Intel Celeron M 350 1.30GHz
