Wanna give my old pc a boost and have the choice between a q8300 or a Core2Quad QX6700 Extreme

Both around the same price.

They are going in a Asus p5w dh deluxe machine

Whats the difference between the two as im well out of the pc loop these days lol:D

And what one should i go for?

Depends on the price. £60 would get you a G0 stepping Q6600. If it's over £100 you would be better off selling what you have and going for a Sandybridge cpu/mobo/ram or a AM3+ mobo with a Phenom ll X4 with a view to getting Bulldozer when it fanally launches. I just don't see any point on spending a lot of money on a dead socket that is two generations behind.

I've got the same board as you and have recently thought of a budget upgrade. My e6600 is still a good chip and can be easily oc'd as you know in the bios.
I was looking on ebay this week at quad chips and they're a fortune. I wouldn't spend £100 on an old chip. i would prefer to crossfire my gpu's for more gaming power.
what cpu have you got?

lol i just fiddle with it and pray.

Maybe im better off looking out for a cheapo upgrade and putting money towards an i3 or i5

It would be better to save and get a full upgrade ie board, cpu and memory. As prices now days are amazing for the performance. If you wanted you could get a 900 series amd motherboard and a old cpu(am3) of some sort. That way you would be future proof for the next gen coming.
