current PC
abit ip35
e2160 @ 2.8Ghz
nvidia gtx 260 oc

I have had to drop the oc a little, but now its a bit choppy playing BFBC2. I could replace the cpu for a Q6600

or

replace cpu / mboard and ram

Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 microATX Motherboard

thats £257 inc vat

I know swapping the cpu for a q6600 would be the cheapest option, but feels like throwing money at old tech!

I would just replace the CPU with a Q6600 and overclock it then look forward to next year when the new SandyBridge and Bulldozer chips are released.

I'm still using one on a p35 chipset. Not problems at all.

I'm going to wait till SandyBridge and drop a Q6600 in instead of the C2D - it works fine in most cases (only video encoding is affected really) but having the quad will offer a boost till upgrade time.
I'm looking forward to upgrading and missing out a CPU generation should offer an appreciable jump in performance (Q6600 to SandyBridge).
